TEAM-THINK RESPONSES: handling negative comments, encouraging referrals, finding & keeping the right employees

Thursday, June 26, 2014

In May, our Networking@Noon event featured a Team-Think activity, inviting our attendees to collaborate with their table-mates to think of new and innovative solutions to everyday business questions. Below are some of the responses that our members came up with that day.

Question:  What can you do when an associate (similar field but different business) appears to be making negative comments about you and/or your business?

  • Be the hero; don’t throw others under the bus.
  • Focus on the positives of what you have to offer your clients.
  • Realize the impact that your negativity has and how it will affect future business dealings.

Question:  Gaining new business through referrals is, for many, the best and most cost-effective way to grow a business. What can you do to encourage your clients and others in your community to refer you?

  • Special card that is returned to the card owner with a point system. Such as, for every card returned, 1 point = $5.00, 2 pt= $10.00, etc off of the owner's services.
  • The owner who hands out the cards also receives the point & $ system
  • Card with numbers (loyalty program).  For example on each visit the card is punched & on the 5th visit the service is $25.00 off.
  • Apply good customer service & people will refer you.

Question:  A company is only as successful as the people behind it. How do you attract the right employees to your business, and once you have them, how do you keep them happy and productive?

  • Attracting the right person varies depending on the industry/Business
  • Seek the right  people for your needs
  • Understand your business & market
  • You can’t train nice.
  • To keep them happy, employees need to buy into company’s vision.
  • Recognize them – clearly and with purpose.
  • Foster respect within at all levels
  • Pay them fairly
