Message from the President

Todd Tuckey, Barrie Chamber PresidentI want to take this time to update everyone on what the Chamber knows and what we are doing in regards to Covid-19

The past week has seen many more cases in this province and across our country. Today, our province announced an additional 88 cases of Covid-19 over yesterday taking our provincial total to 588 cases.

The health community is truly concerned about a spike during this week and next as snow birds and others return to our province and city.

It is critical that all returning to Canada self isolate for 14 days immediately upon their return.

These returning Canadians will not be able to go to the grocery store, gas station, pharmacy, etc. Please reach out to your family, friends, and neighbours prior to or upon their return and offer to run these errands for them and drop the items at their door so that they are not forced to leave their homes to resupply. Let them know that you are happy they are safely home, and that while they may be isolated, they are not alone in this difficult time.

Yesterday, our premier announced a mandatory closure of all non-essential workplaces effective at 11:59 pm tonight. The list of the services classified as essential is on our Chamber site for you to review.

We have been in discussions with the province and there are some areas that are not clear, particularly in the manufacturing sector.

If you are in the manufacturing sector and you supply something related to the health industry or food industry than you are deemed essential.

The best we can come up with after conversations with the province and City of Barrie today is this: first and foremost is the safety of your employees and their families.

After that, as a manufacturer if you are not sure if your business is deemed essential, you should ask yourself what is the value of you keeping your doors open versus the health of your employees; if you have to truly think if your business is essential or not, then it probably is not.

If you are essential then you must do everything to enforce social distancing as much as possible with your staff while in the workplace. Have your staff wear PPE regardless of how close they will be working with others.

It is up to all of us to do our part to slow down then eventually stop the transmission of this virus. This can only be done through self quarantine, social distancing and simply avoiding all contact with others where possible.

The Barrie Chamber staff is doing a great job of keeping our membership aware of what is going on and when it's going on in regards to this virus.

On our social media platforms and website you will find links to help employees file for EI; help businesses know where to go for financial assistance; zoom seminars with lawyers and health care professionals, as well as MPs and MPPs; links on what banks and other financial institutions are doing to help businesses and individuals with deferring mortgage payments, credit card payments, lines of credit etc.

The Chamber is your trusted resource for all things related to leading your business through the impacts of Covid-19.

We are ensuring that the information we have on our site and social media platforms is relevant, accurate and as timely as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the Chamber staff; if for some reason we don’t have the answer, we will get it to you as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your continued efforts in protecting our community's health and economy, take care and stay safe.
