Maintain your sump pump and protect your home from flooding

Thursday, February 27, 2014

A sump pump is a small pump installed in the lowest part of a basement or crawlspace to help keep the area under the building dry and prevent flooding.

If your home has a sump pump, it is important to perform regular maintenance to help keep it in proper working order. And remember, in the event of an electrical power outage in your home, the sump pump won’t operate unless you have a battery back-up or generator.

Here are some other helpful tips.

  • In order for a sump pump to operate effectively, it should be plugged in at all times.
  • Following a power outage, check to ensure your sump pump is still functioning properly.
  • It is a good idea to install a surge protector for your sump pump to prevent potential damage from power surges.
  • A leak detection alarm placed near a sump pump can provide early detection of a pump failure.
