A Slow Time for Business is a Great Time for Networking

By Bill Justus, Justus Pest Control

This time of year is fairly slow for me in the pest control business. I still take care of my commercial contracts such as restaurants, warehouses and factories, but my residential business slows right down.

So what I do at this time of year is make contact with my regular customers and other people in my network. Some people I'll phone, some people I'll email, and if my customers have a storefront business, I'll stop by to say hello and ask how things are going. Of course I remind them that if they do have any issues with pests they can call me.

One of the things I enjoy the most is meeting a customer for lunch. I'd never be able to do that during my busier season, but now I can. After all, some of these people have been with me for years – it's only natural to become friendly.

I also do more networking with other business owners in the area, like going to the events at the Barrie Chamber. I never know who I'm going to run into, or who I might meet. Even if that person never needs my services, someone they know will.

I hate sitting around when things aren't busy. If I'm not careful, negativity can set in and that's exactly what happened in my first few years in business. But after awhile, I realized that I needed to get out of the office and keep active and busy.

By focusing on networking during my down time, I get to reconnect with my customers, meet new customers and best of all stay upbeat and hopeful. And it's definitely worked well for me – I've gained new customers because of it.

How do you keep busy during your down time?

P.S. The bugs may be on vacation here in Canada, but if you're traveling, you just might find them. The next time you check into a hotel, be on the lookout for bed bugs. Strip your bed and inspect the back of your headboard. If you do spot any evidence of bugs, report it to the manager and get yourself into a new room. And don't forget to check that one as well!
