Which American Cities Are the Most Export-Dependent on Canada?

The Business Data Lab explores the U.S. cities that would be most impacted by decreased demand from Canada.

A new report from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Business Data Lab reveals just how important Canadian trade is to many U.S. cities. Using 2023 data, the report ranks 41 metro areas by how dependent they are on exports to Canada—both in terms of volume and share of their local economy.

The results are eye-opening: cities like San Antonio, Detroit, and Kansas City send nearly 40–50% of their total exports to Canada, highlighting just how tightly our economies are linked.

For businesses, this isn’t just interesting—it’s essential. Trade policies, tariffs, or economic shifts in Canada could directly affect major U.S. regions and industries.
