(TORONTO – January 6, 2024) – The Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s President and CEO, Daniel Tisch, released a statement following Prime Minister Trudeau’s resignation today as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada:

“Prime Minister Trudeau’s decision enables Canada to enter a new year with a contest between new voices articulating new economic visions – both within the Liberal Party now and between all parties in this year’s federal election.

“With two weeks until the U.S. presidential inauguration and instability around the world, Canadian prosperity depends on a sustainable growth agenda that unleashes business investment, entrepreneurship, innovation, productivity and competitiveness – while investing more strategically in talent development, infrastructure and healthy communities.

“We urge the PM to work closely with the provinces during his remaining time in office, taking a “Team Canada” approach to U.S. relations and other immediate challenges.

“We thank Mr. Trudeau for his service and remain committed to working with leaders at all levels to advance inclusive, sustainable prosperity in Ontario and Canada.”

Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau read the room and made the right call by stepping down today.

Canadian Chamber of Commerce - January 6, 2025

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau read the room and made the right call by announcing his resignation today.

His resignation marks a turning point as Canada tackles unprecedented domestic and international challenges. Canada can’t afford inaction with so much at stake. Unity is key: political leaders, businesses, and communities must come together around our common opportunities. Canada’s next Prime Minister must hit the ground running and be laser-focused on strengthening the Canada-U.S. trade relationship.

We have always been a nation of builders, and we should harness our entrepreneurial spirit to boost our lagging productivity and deliver on the priorities that matter to Canadians. The time for wasteful spending and over-taxation is done — we need to aim higher and deliver the better life all Canadians deserve.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce thanks Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his years of dedicated service to Canada.
