The Chamber is working to keep family doctors in Barrie

Friday, September 20, 2013

The Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU) at Royal Victoria Hospital is a local initiative to address the family doctor shortage in our area. The FMTU is a partnership between the University of Toronto, the Royal Victoria Hospital, and the Barrie Community Family Health Team that was launched in July of 2009. The FMTU is a place for medical residents to learn and practice. Statistics show that family doctors are more likely to set up their own practices in the area where they receive their training.

Over the past several years, the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce has been providing ongoing support to the FMTU, with contributions to their library, supplies, and equipment, as well as an annual welcome package for incoming residents. The Barrie Chamber has raised funds for the FMTU through a variety of events and activities, asking their members to dig deep to help keep new family doctors in Barrie. The Barrie business community definitely stepped up to make a difference, and earlier this week the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce was pleased to hand over a cheque to the FMTU for $26,631.00.

“The Barrie Chamber is very grateful to all of its members, associates, and partners that helped make this possible. It’s so important that we all work together as a community to bring family doctors to our area,” stated Sybil Goruk, Executive Director of the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce. “With thousands of Barrie residents without a family physician, initiatives like the FMTU are a crucial step towards getting the services our community needs, and they’ve had a huge impact on the patient load already.”
