JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to: The Board of Directors (Board) through the President/Chair of the Board.

Purpose

The ED is the key operational staff person who leads the organization’s staff. The ED works directly with its Board of Directors, the Board’s committees and task forces. Under the broad supervision of the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for growing the organization; serving and retaining the organization’s membership while ensuring continued high satisfaction of the members; and achieving the approved strategic pillars.

Authority

To operate the organization within the Board-approved budget, seeking approval for items with variances above Board approved parameters.

To hire, setting compensation based on industry standards and within budget parameters; establish terms of employment for, direct the activities of, and evaluate and terminate employees of the organization.

Execute Board-approved contracts on behalf of the organization.

 

Summary of Duties

The ED is responsible for the daily operations of the organization, supported by the Board, committees and task forces:

Leads and supervises the daily operations of the organization. These duties include but are not limited to the development, implementation, and execution of annual Business Development, Operational and Communications plans for Board review at their first meeting of the upcoming year; management of programs, membership and sponsorship marketing efforts; and the assessment of risks to the organization’s financial security and growth.  

  • Leads the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of organization programs and member-oriented services while ensuring that programs and services meet the Board’s policy guidelines, and reflect the Board’s priorities.

Implements and manages the planning, development and execution of all programs/projects/publications/events and services.

All fundraising events will require a pro forma budget of expected revenues and expenses prior to the commencement of each event, in addition to financial tracking during event development, and a final P&L summary and evaluation of each event.

Ensures financial stability and sound financial management of the organization.

Makes recommendations to and participates with the Board to develop, and update the organization Vision and Strategic Plan to achieve goals and objectives within policy guidelines.

Identifies, analyzes, develops and communicates recommendations for continuous improvement; identifies emerging internal and external issues that will affect the organization.

Manages the funds of the organization according to the budget approved by the Board, providing input to the finance committee.

Provides regular, reliable, and comparable oral and written reports on the organization’s progress to the Board. This includes a monthly report to the Board and the agenda and minutes (with a record of decisions) for all meetings.

Establishes volunteer recruitment processes in concert with committee Terms of References.

Ensures co-operation, collaboration and support among the Board, committees, volunteers and members.

Responsible for recruitment, retention, and evaluation of staff within policy guidelines.

Inspires, leads and manages a diverse staff, ensuring sound Human Resource management in order to achieve high-performance organizational effectiveness.

Encourages team-building by facilitating open communication and positive working relationships with staff and volunteers.

Identifies and recruits strong volunteer leadership for various initiatives.

Advises the Board Chair in the appointment of Board and organization members to committees, and task forces.

Takes leadership from and works in collaboration with the Board Chair to ensure consistent, accurate messaging to members and media.

Works with the Board Chair to prepare agendas and materials for Board and Executive Committee meetings.

Attends organization Board and committee meetings and provides staff support to committee efforts. Supports Board committees as needed.

Participates in events, networking and community relations and activities on behalf of the organization.

Builds strong working relationships and partnerships with other organizations.

Ensures the implementation of and adherence to the organization’s current constitution, policies and by-laws.

Participates in higher level membership and sponsorship sales; researches and identifies funding opportunities; identifies, develops and evaluates the potential revenue and liabilities of revenue-generating programs and events.

Ensures a credible, active advocacy role on behalf of membership, promoting community awareness of the organization’s mission and goals.
