Ecofest Barrie - June 12, 2010

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

A Great Day for the Whole Family:
The Ecofest Barrie project is meant to be a ‘celebration” through environmental learning sharing, and caring. The festival will feature creative options and ideas for greening our homes and businesses as well as new and exciting ways that we as individuals can benefit from a more earth-friendly focus. The festival will offer news and activities for the whole family. It is a truly green event, so bring your own containers, get rid of the plastics, ride your bike, take the bus or walk and be a part of a great day with lots to do and see.

For the Kids:
For Kids and Parents, Ecofestbarrie is proud to present a very special display from the Simcoe County District Board of Education featuring student driven presentations of Energy Conservation, Renewable Options, Waste Recycling and more. Students from the Simcoe communities will share their visions towards a new world. Kids young and old will be thrilled with live wild life demonstrations by the renowned Wye Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary who will bring us an up close look at live birds and reptiles facing a changing world. Children are invited to visit our many activity areas being hosted by numerous volunteer groups including Katimavik, Transitions Barrie, and the Simcoe County Board of Education. Everyone is encouraged to take part in the festival fun.

Music and the Arts:
The Festival message of sharing comes through from the many artists and performers who will be offering their talents. The day will unfold many thought-provoking performances and you’ll enjoy the ambient sounds and sites while you and your family enjoy Barrie’s beautiful Heritage Park. Join the band by powering it with your bike! Mr. Something Something is in concert and is sponsored by Downtown Barrie. This group is making headlines on their Canadian Tour and they’ll have us partying outdoors! The band has 2 performances one at 11 and one at 3:30 pm. Catch The Magic Bunch, a family of R&B performers whose music will knock your sandals off!

Another of the afternoon’s main attractions will be the Trashfusion Design Awards presentation. Local artists have fused what would normally end up in the recycling bin into unbelievable wearable eco-couture. Designers will be featured at a “runway” styled presentation at 2 pm and are vying for a cash prize of $1,000, sponsored by Barrie’s WSI Waste Disposal. The contest will be judged by some very special guests with special support by Adria Vasil, Now Magazine’s renowned columnist and author of “Ecoholic”. Adria will be on hand for a special book signing.

Festival Speakers and Learning Centres:
The Festival will feature Learning Centres that will include many options for discovery. The Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce and Grand & Toy and ecofest barrie proudly present The Ecofest Film and Learning Centre, a day-long film and speaker series offering expertise from some of Ontario’s best-known Green Leaders.
