Business Community Must Continue to be Part of Ontario's Financial Solution

Thursday, February 25, 2016

"The Ontario government has not engaged in meaningful reform of services for the past two years."

--Rod Jackson, CEO

The Barrie Chamber of Commerce is pleased with the Ontario government's intention to consult more with business on the cap and trade system, and is calling on them to take the same approach as it moves forward with the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP).

"The Barrie Chamber remains concerned about the approach government has taken to the implementation of the cap and trade system for emissions," said Rod Jackson, CEO.

"However, we are encouraged by the government's commitment to designate the funds from the cap and trade system to a new Greenhouse Gas Reduction Account."

Jackson continued that "the business community must be consulted about how those funds are allocated."

As the ORPP rolls out, the Chamber also calls for a collaborative approach between the government and the business community to ensure there are no short to medium term negative impacts on GDP and consumer spending.

Finally, Jackson concluded that "if the government is serious about reducing the deficit, it must meaningfully engage the private sector to identify areas where an injection of private sector capital and expertise can improve service quality and lower service provision costs."
