4 Ways the Barrie Public Library Can Help You Grow Your Business

Friday, February 26, 2016

So - you want to be your own boss! Owning your own business comes with the perks of doing things your way and being in control of decisions. It can also come with risks and challenges. Fortunately, the City of Barrie is entrepreneur-friendly, with a variety of supports and resources to help you succeed. The Barrie Public Library is one of those great resources! Here are four ways we can help you grow your business:

Create a business plan

Any new business requires a business plan. You need to conduct research, determine your strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities, and calculate expected revenue and expenses. This can be daunting! Our Business Plan Basics program is designed to make this process easier. The program is run in partnership with the Small Business Centre in Barrie, and we explain what a business plan is and what should be included, and help you get started in the process. It’s a fantastic way to get your plan in motion. View more about Business Plan Basics.

Use our free online databases

In order to grow your business, you need to know who to target. The Barrie Public Library subscribes to SimplyMap, a powerful tool used to map your target markets, research demographic information and create reports. You can search data from the Canadian Census, Canadian Survey of Household Spending and more. Use it to find the best place to locate your business, research your competition and determine which markets might be underserved. Our other online databases cover a wide variety of topics, from real business plan examples, to business and current affairs articles, to Canadian legal forms for businesses. Learn ‘how to’ at our workshops

Want guidance on how to get the most out of SimplyMap for your established business? We’re running hands-on workshops this spring with one hour of instruction time and one hour of hands-on practice with a librarian there to help you. Each workshop is tailored to a different goal you might be facing, like reaching new clients, expanding your product line or growing your home-based business. They’re also a great chance to network and meet others in our community. Why not build some connections and share ideas! View more about our workshops.

Connect you with the right people

Information Barrie is a community information and referral agency which can connect you to the right people and organizations. Located in our Downtown location, our library staff can work with you to figure out who may be beneficial to connect with and their contact information. The Community Database is also available online so you can search by service category, target populations, special interest clubs and groups, and more. View our Community Database.

And last but not least, we have free Wi-Fi, a new scanner and great spaces to meet and collaborate!
