Behind an unassuming doorway on Clapperton Street, just up from the five points, those in the know gather throughout the week at a little gem named Painters Hall Bistro.
A long hallway showcasing many of Barrie's best artists affords two options. Candlelight mellows the refined rustic front dining room while the back lounge buzzes offering a fantastic small plate menu and terrific wines by the glass or bottle from an unpretentious, approachable wine list.
Local Chef Jim Garraway has fashioned solid, contemporary menus for lunch, dinner and the bar. Beef and seafood dominate the dinner menu with customer favourites, a seared fresh pickerel with a grilled prosciutto maple butter, halibut fillet with scallion gnocchi and the melt in your mouth braised short rib.
The dinner menu may have you licking your plate but the bar menu could have you licking three or four. Duck confit perogies, perfectly steamed mussels in an amazing smoked onion broth, ulled pork wonton with crisp braised pork belly and the succulent veal cheek with micro salad and citrus ale reduction are dishes that create culinary memories.
Owners Erin and Shane Burrows are in most every night to welcome both regulars and newcomers. They are supported by friendly, attentive and truly professional service staff and anchored by Chef Jim Garraway.
Garraway has always been passionate about food, at the age of 20 he moved to Whistler B.C. to do his apprenticeship with some of the countries best chefs. He then moved to Tofino and became the Chef at the world renowned Wickaninnish Inn.
Serious Barrie diners are fortunate to have him back! Painters Hall is open Wednesday through Sunday at noon.
