In June, Mayor Lehman joined us again to give us an update on Barrie's economy, where we are, and where we're going. He spoke about how the past 6 months had been remarkable; there are good statistics, but also intangible markers he likes to watch.
- In May 2010, the unemployment rate in Barrie was 10%; in May 2011, it was 8.9%, which accounts for an increase of 6200 jobs in one year.
- In January, there were 24 vacant storefronts in Downtown Barrie; today, there are only 11 - this is an important indicator of revitalization.
Mayor Lehman noted that Council holds 2 town hall meetings each month to talk to the community and get feedback. From what they've heard and seen, we're moving in the right direction.
He went on to speak about how we're close to the GTA, but we're not a suburb; rather, we are an economic hub, a regional centre. He noted that he sees lots of opportunities for himself and the city to go out and help with business growth.
In concluding his presentation, Mayor Lehman spoke about the City's Strategic Plan, and how economic development is the #1 goal for all Councillors.
